Call for applications: Goethe-Institut virtual residence project
Goethe-Institut and German classical music group Ensemble Recherche are calling on emerging composers and sound artists from developing and transition countries to collaborate in a virtual community of artistic research and music creation.
The project seeks to promote and support 10 selected composers by giving them a voice and platform to showcase their artistic work. It aims to research postcolonialism and its consequences and to deal with the knowledge artistically, thus assuming an individual artistic stance.
The artists will work closely with members of Ensemble Recherche in a mutual exchange for 10 days of virtual residencies. The process will be curated and documented by Bongani Ndodana-Breen and German public radio Deutschlandfunk, respectively. The resulting musical works will be performed and recorded by Ensemble Recherche in 2022 and the composers will receive a grant worth €800 (about $950) from Goethe-Institut. No further expenses will be covered.
How to apply
- All composers living and working in developing and transition countries are encouraged to apply regardless of their age, gender, race, or non-academic formation.
Applications must be submitted via the Cultural Funding Portal by 30 August. Documents received after the deadline will not be considered.
The following documents and scores should be uploaded:
- Three recent scores (PDF) with permanent links to audio or video recordings. If the piece has not been performed yet, uploading the score would be sufficient (for one work out of three). If it is an acousmatic, installative or sound work, a link to a video/audio documentation would be sufficient (for one work out of three). However, applicants must make sure that the link does not expire. They can use YouTube, SoundCloud, Dropbox or any other permanent file-hosting service.
- An essay (maximum 4 000 characters), which reflects the applicants’ biographic, artistic or scientific relation to postcolonialism. More specific research questions or a description of an artistic approach are requested. The essay should highlight the applicants’ qualifications not only in musical, but also in more general artistic terms, as well as in self-reflection and communication skills, which are necessary for a collective working process.
- A short video (maximum two minutes) of the applicants introducing themselves and talking about their motivation to participate in the project.
- CV (including information on the participants’ current residence).
- Language of the application and the entire project: A good command of English is required.
“We envision participants around the world, therefore we take into consideration all participants’ time zones as much as possible,” a joint statement reads. “However, in some circumstances, there are possibilities of residencies being scheduled in early morning or late evening in your time zone.”
