Call for scores: Stargirl superhero series
Spitfire Audio is calling on composers to submit scores for a Stargirl superhero clip from the series for a chance to win a share of more than $20 000 in products and a mentoring session with Stargirl A-list composer Pinar Toprak.
The competition is courtesy of DC Entertainment and Mad Ghost Productions. Interested participants can download the music-free clip from season one of the series, create their own score and submit before 12.59am CAT on 13 August.
How it works
- Spitfire Audio says the clip chosen by Toprak goes from “intense action to drama very quickly”. It is the composer’s job to wrap these moments with suitable music.
- Entrants will be judged on the individuality of their score. They do not have to necessarily match the original score or the rest of the series.
- Entrants can choose to programme an orchestra, record live instruments or their voice, or maybe use a blend of synthesisers and free libraries like LABS.
- The music should be the dialogue and sound effects on screen, and scores should handle the mix of emotions in the transition.
- Any digital audio workstation (DAW) and instrumentation can be used.
- Toprak and Spitfire Audio will judge the submissions, and the winner will be announced on 23 September 2021.
- Entrants need to submit their scores via the application form on Spitfire’s official website, and upload the final video to their YouTube account with the tag #MyStargirlScore.
Prizes
- The winner will receive a Spitfire Audio Everything collection, comprising every Spitfire Audio library on two external SSDs worth more than $20 000.
- The winner will also receive a virtual mentoring session with Toprak and a manuscript of the Stargirl theme signed by her.
- Four runners-up will receive the Spitfire Audio Albion collection and a signed manuscript of the Stargirl theme.
“Whether this is your first score to picture or you’re well-versed in scoring and sound design, this is a great opportunity to practice with top-tier material,” Spitfire Audio said.
Pinar Toprak has more than 20 years of experience in music composition across film, TV and video games. She has scored superhero sagas such as Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, DC’s Stargirl, SY-FY’s Superman series Krypton, and Epic Games’ Fortnite.
