SA: Joyous Celebration to stage all-female concert for Women’s Month
South African gospel group Joyous Celebration will stage a virtual performance on JoyousTV on 21 August.
The three-hour concert will honour South African women and will be led by an all-female cast of vocalists. It coincides with Women’s Month in August when South Africa commemorates the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956 to make a stand against the country’s apartheid pass laws.
“We’re inviting and encouraging people to make a date of it, whether they will be watching it with their girls, friends or families,” Joyous Celebration co-founder and producer Lindelani Mkhize said. “With a varied repertoire that will not only focus on music from the latest album, viewers will be captivated and enthralled by the beautiful, melodic and sensational voices and sounds of our women-only vocalists; they won’t even miss the male singers.”
Mkhize added that the concert could turn into an annual event. “Women continue to face many challenges in society, at home and in the workplace, and the past 16 months have been incredibly challenging for the country and in particular women – many of whom continue to suffer severe economic and social impact as a result of the pandemic,“ he said.
“Yet despite this and echoing the spirit of the ensembles’ 25th album title, Still We Rise, women are not only at the forefront of the pandemic in various roles, but continue to break barriers and make their mark in countless industries and professions. It is this very spirit of rising despite all odds that the show will celebrate.”
Joyous Celebration singer Nomthie Sibisi described the upcoming event as an opportunity for the ensemble’s female members to showcase their talent.
“These are exciting times for us as we show what we are made of without our male counterparts. Not only do we get to go back on stage to do what we love, but we do so as a women-only cast to celebrate ourselves, our mothers, sisters, daughters and all the women who came before us and those who will come after us,” she said.
The concert will start at 6pm and fans can buy tickets here or at Pick n Pay stores across South Africa.
