Call for applications: Nafasi Art Space artist residency in Tanzania
Nafasi Art Space is accepting applications for its New Shapes programme – a residency and workshop that will run between October and December in Dar es salaam and Morogoro, Tanzania.
The programme aims to engage artistic and curatorial practices as a means to inform and systemise – socially, historically and aesthetically – relevant approaches to materials and concepts under specific themes.
Selected participants will engage in collaborative exercises and activities designed to examine and explore modes of handling, living and existing with the natural world in order to better define shifts in the social and cultural interactions with the earth.
The programme is intended for residents of East Africa, working as:
- Artists, curators, designers, photographers and filmmakers.
- Cultural practitioners with interests ranging from food, craft, healing/medicine, architecture and the environment.
Note: Applicants from outside Tanzania would be required to cover travel and accommodation expenses.
The New Shapes programme will include:
- Intensive workshops.
- Workshops.
- Research.
- Artistic production and collaboration, resulting in an exhibition in December.
Requirements
To qualify, the applicant should be older than 18 years and must send:
- Biography.
- Portfolio.
- Letter of motivation.
The application deadline is 29 September.
“We hope many, many artists from diverse backgrounds and experiences will apply to join us for a residency at Nafasi,” Nafasi Art Space director Rebecca Yeong Ae Corey told Music In Africa. “We have seen first-hand how many great moments and relationships have come out of these residencies in the past.
“It's a very competitive process. We hope the application process will introduce us to the diversity of amazing artists out there who might be interested in sharing their talent and time with our community in Dar es Salaam.”
