Call for applications: RMN Classical Modern Music for Piano competition

The initiative seeks to promote the creation of new works for piano and discover composers to feature in the new album Modern Music for Piano 4, a new release that will be produced by RMN Classical.

The album will be distributed on numerous platforms and outlets around the world including Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora and Deezer. It will be promoted on various news networks in North America and around the UK and Europe. Based on demand, there will be the possibility to print the release in a limited edition CD, and all the winning works will be added to the British Library Sound Archive. Future opportunities will also be extended to all the winning composers and tracks in the catalogue.

Benefits

All winning works will benefit from the following:

• Production of the release.
• Mastering of the work.
• Design of the cover artwork.
• Design of promotional material.
• Creation of the album press release
• Preparation of the promotional text.
• Essential promotion including press release distribution and social media boost.
• Share of the sales.
• Composers will keep the rights to the work and master recording.
• Commercial release with worldwide distribution.
• Rights management and royalty collection.
• British Library, Sound and Music Archive registration.
• Creation of official album page and composer page on RMN Classical.

The following will also be included:

• Option for synchronisation and licensing opportunities (TV and media).
• Option for limited edition CD print (depending on demand).
• Licensing and copyright clearance.
• Full contracts and agreements with the winning composers and artists.
• Barcodes and ISRC codes.

Guidelines

• RMN Classical only accepts piano works.
• For this call, only works for piano solo will be accepted.
• Both live and studio recordings are accepted.
• VST/computer-generated tracks are accepted.
• Works that include electronics are accepted.
• Works for duo, trio (chamber music), etc. (e.g. piano and flute) are not accepted.
• Works that include voice or percussion are not accepted.
• There is no maximum duration. Applicants are encouraged to submit short- and medium-length tracks.
• There is no limit on the number of recordings that should be submitted.

How to participate

Applicants should apply here before 7 November (early birds). An application fee of £39 ($53) per work submitted is the only cost for the participant. No other fees/costs will be due if the composer is selected. The full price of £79 is required per work before 28 November.

Accepted genre

• Contemporary music for piano solo is preferred.
• Works with jazz, pop, world or other influences is accepted.
• Piano duos or four (or more) hands are accepted.
• Other combinations of duo and trio with piano (e.g. violin and piano, cello and piano) will not be accepted.

Multi-movement works

• Multi-movement works can be submitted and will count as one work. E.g. A three-movement sonata will count as one work. Applicants should take note that sometimes to showcase more composers and performers, only a single movement from their work will be selected.
• Collection of works will not count as one work and the application fee should be paid accordingly. E.g. A collection of three preludes will count as three works and the application fee should be paid three times or the submission will be disqualified. You will have the opportunity to indicate the number of works during the application process.

What to submit

A link to a folder containing the following material:

• Recording of work plus score in PDF.
• Notes about the work (Word file).
• Composer’s biography (Word file).
• One promotional photo of the composer (portrait orientation).
• Notes in Word file and photo about the performer (optional).

Note: The link should stay active for the whole duration of the call and until the winners are announced. Accepted systems are Dropbox, Box and other similar services. Applicants should avoid Google Drive, WeTransfer and SoundCloud. Submissions that use Google Drive, WeTransfer, SoundCloud will get disqualified and the application fee won't be refunded.

Applications who do not meet the above-required material will be disqualified, and the application fee won’t be refunded.
