Call for scores: Riot Ensemble in the UK
The Riot Ensemble in London, UK, is looking to commission two composers to write new pieces.
The first composer will write a 5-8’ quartet for flute, clarinet, violin and cello (with or without electronics) to be premiered at Tzlil Meudcan Festival in Israel in July 2022. The commission fee for this work will be £750 ($850).
The second composer will write a 10-15’ ensemble work for Riot Ensemble’s October 2022 concert at Kings Place. The composer will select a line-up of up to 12 musicians (with or without electronics) drawn from David Del Tredici’s ‘Syzygy’. The commission fee for this work will be £1500 – with an additional fund of up to £500 available to offset travel costs – and the premiere will take place in London on 14 October 2022.
Eligibility
This call is open for any composer not currently represented on Riot Ensemble’s 2022 Season.
Requirements
Interested applicants should submit the following:
- Name, country of residence, email address, and (optionally) your pronouns.
- PDF files of two scores. These pieces may be for any instrumentation and written at any point in your life/career. Riot Ensemble simply wants to hear your best work.
- Links to recordings of these pieces if possible.
“Recordings are not mandatory,” Riot Ensemble said. “Of course, they are helpful, but our musicians are fluent score readers and we have commissioned composers in the past who have not submitted a recording.”
Selection process
The submissions will be reviewed independently by three members of the ensemble’s artistic board. The conglomeration of these reviews will be used to draw up a shortlist. This shortlist will then be reviewed by all members of the artistic board. At the final stage, the ensemble will choose the two composers via a democratic discussion.
The winners will be announced on 31 January 2022.
Interested composers can submit their entries here.
The submission deadline is 27 December.
