SA: Busiswa, Nomcebo Zikode to appear in Love and Hip Hop series
South African musicians Busiswa and Nomcebo Zikode will make an appearance in American series Love & Hip Hop: Lineage to Legacy, which will premiere on VH1 in the US on 7 February. The African dates for screening are yet to be announced.
The show gives reality stars the opportunity to delve deeper into their heritage and lineage, with a little help from DNA testing and analysis. Hosted by True Life Crime host Dometi Pongo, the series will also examine the harsh lasting effects of chattel slavery and challenge stereotypical views of black culture while celebrating Africa’s rich history.
Busiswa and Nomcebo Zikode collaborated with members of the Love & Hip Hop and Black Ink Crew franchises on the special two-part show, where they explore their roots and ancestry. Liberian celebrity chef Chauncy Yarngo makes a special appearance on the show, and the South Africans are joined by American artists Remy Ma, Papoose, Yandy Smith-Harris, Rich Dollaz, Tokyo Vanity, Paris Phillips, Karlie Redd and Momma Dee.
Busiswa said her role in the show was to meet with African American artists and share her experiences about how it feels “to be someone who’s always known my lineage, clan names, heritage, culture and able to make music in my native language isiXhosa and what that has been like compared to how they’ve struggled even to know the lineage of their grandparents.”
“I am so excited to be part of this two-part show because it’s about African ancestry and the cast finding their lineage including myself,” she said. “I am happy to be a part of this because everyone knows how proud I am to be an African girl who reaches all parts of the world and now gets to be a part of one of the biggest reality franchises in the world.”
Busiswa was approached by the show’s executive producer, Mona Scott-Young, while on a six-week tour in the US late last year, where she travelled to six cities and performed at eight events including Afro Carnival, One World Global Music Festival and another where she opened for Wizkid.
“I got on her [Mona Scott-Young‘s] radar while I was in the US and also her knowing my work from the feature with Beyoncé must have had its part,” she said. “My scenes were shot on location in Atlanta and the entire shoot was amazing and such a great experience to meet all of the cast and to learn tricks of the trade from Mona Scott-Young as someone who really plans to go much deeper into broadcasting and hopefully be able to do a second season of my reality show Her Majesty: Busiswa with BET.”
Meanwhile, the ‘Bazoyenza’ hitmaker will perform at the inaugural Afro Nation Puerto Rico festival alongside Megan Thee Stallion and a host of African popstars this March. She has also been confirmed to perform at the Trace Made in Africa Festival in Porto, Portugal, in June.
