Two fans die in Zimbabwe concert stampede
Two people were killed in a stampede at the Castle Tankard concert at Borrowdale Race Course in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Saturday.
The event featured local musicians Alick Macheso, Winky D and Enzo Ishall. Local reports said the stampede started when local police removed Winky D from the stage, which angered a number of fans who began throwing bottles and cans. Although it is unclear why the ‘Njema' hitmaker was removed from the stage, some reports suggest that the police were enforcing a curfew.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating the sad and unfortunate death of two people at Borrowdale Race Course on 7 May 2022 at 10.05pm hours due to stampede after the Castle Tankard musical performance by Winky D,” national police spokesperson assistant commissioner Paul Nyathi said in a statement.
“The regrettable incident occurred while people were on their way out of the Race Course. The police express condolences to the bereaved families and assures the public that inquiries are in progress. The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to engage organisers of big social gatherings, especially entertainment activities to ensure that a limited number of people is allowed access during musical performances.”
Delta Corporation general manager of corporate affairs Patricia Murambinda said: “The Castle Tankard event organisers, Delta Beverages and Mashonaland Turf Club, participating artists, trade partners and stakeholders are saddened by the reports of fatalities and injuries that occurred at the close of the very successful hosting of the Castle Tankard 2022 edition.
“We are informed that the relevant authorities are conducting investigations and will update the nation at the relevant time. Our hearts and prayers are with you our Castle Tankard family – especially those who lost their loved ones and those nursing injuries.”
This is not the first time a concert has descended into chaos in Zimbabwe. In 2014, a number of people were injured at a Zimdancehall show at City Sports Centre in the capital Harare when two musicians were involved in an altercation that resulted in a fight between fans, some of whom attempted to storm the stage.
