Merck Foundation announces 2021 Song Awards winners
The Merck Foundation, in partnership with African First Ladies, has announced the winners of the 2021 More Than A Mother Song Awards.
The Merck Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA in Germany, while African First Ladies are the ambassadors of the More Than A Mother initiative.
In June 2021, African musicians were invited to create a song which aims to tackle social issues in Africa such as the stigma around infertility as well as support other prominent challenges, including the education of girls, women empowerment, ending child marriage, and gender-based violence.
This year’s edition featured two awards with three categories: English Language, French Language and Local Language. The first award seeks to address the social issues at all levels, while the second award is targeted at promoting a healthy lifestyle, prevention and early detection of diabetes and hypertension.
“Big congratulations to all the winners," Merck Foundation CEO and president of More Than a Mother Dr Rasha Kelej said. “I am overwhelmed by the response we received in the form of entries from talented singers and musicians from across Africa. I strongly believe that through music and art, problems can be felt, which further stimulates feelings and leads to engagement and action.”
