Cape Town Jazzathon to feature stellar line-up
The Cape Town Jazzathon festival will feature top South African artists, including Cameron Ward and Kyle Shepherd, at the Grand Arena, GrandWest, Acacia Park, from 17 to 19 June.
Other acts in the line-up comprise Don Vino, Jonathan Rubain, The Little Giants and the Cape Jazz Legends featuring pianist and trumpeter Tony Cedras, pianist Tete Tete Mbambisa, bassist Spencer Mbadu, guitarist Alvin Dyers and drummer Denver Ferness, with special appearances by vocalists Danny Butler and Sylvia Mdunyelwa. They will be joined by Virtual Jazz Reality, Loading Zone and a guitar summit curated by Ward. More performers will be announced soon.
On Day Three, the concert will also host a number of gospel artists in a set called Gospel According to Jazzathon, boasting some of the biggest names in the genre such as Loyiso Bala, Ernie Smith, Veronica Meyer, The Jesus Collective, and Jonathan Rubain with the Koortjies Band.
Affectionately known as "The People’s Festival", the event will mark its 25th anniversary this year, with the organisers promising an event unlike any other.
“This is a landmark occasion for the Cape Town Jazzathon,” festival director Craig Parks said. “So, we’ve gone all out to make this an extraordinary event, and thus we would like to show fans how much we appreciate jazz culture. Fans can respect that even though the cost of living has increased, we have managed to keep the entry fee prices down to an absolute minimum.”
Festivalgoers can purchase a weekend pass which will give them access to the Friday and Saturday shows.
Founded in 1997, the main aim of Jazzathon, and The Cape Town Jazzathon, is to provide a platform for previously disadvantaged, brand-new, young, upcoming artists. Jazzathon is a multifaceted project that promotes jazz in as many ways as possible, including live performances, educational workshop programmes, awards programmes, and multimedia content. The event also pays tribute to women, the youth, and legacy artists.
