Nigeria: Larry Gaaga lands Def Jam Africa VP role
Universal Music Group (UMG) imprint Def Jam Recordings Africa has announced Nigerian musician and label exec Larry Gaaga as its new vice-president for A&R.
Larry Gaaga’s appointment arrives two years after Def Jam launched operations in Johannesburg and Lagos, with the artist among the company’s flagship signings.
Larry Gaaga will lead Def Jam’s A&R division across English-speaking markets, reporting to Universal Music South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa CEO Sipho Dlamini.
Larry Gaaga’s career dates back to 2010 when he joined YSG Entertainment and rose through the ranks to the post of general manager. He is behind multiple commercially successful tracks including ‘Gaga Shuffle’ with 2Baba, ‘Slow Burner’ featuring Joeboy, the Davido-assisted ‘Doe’ and ‘Low’ featuring Wizkid.
Def Jam Africa says his appointment “reaffirms the label’s belief and respect of Larry’s artistry and creative vision.” The company added that his team would scout African talent that “speaks to and resonates with the defining culture and artistry of the Def Jam legacy”.
“I’m excited at the opportunity I’ve been entrusted with here at Def Jam Africa,” Larry Gaaga said. “My experience as an artist and manager at the label not only gives me a unique perspective to share with our talent, but means I’m well versed in the spirit and culture of this legacy label.”
Dlamini said: “Larry is a talented creative, astute A&R and strategic executive. Expanding his relationship with Def Jam is an exciting next step in Africa’s hip hop story and a big move for the culture.”
Meanwhile, Def Jam Africa recently announced Stonebwoy as its latest signing, with the vision of introducing his sound and Ghanaian music culture to new audiences globally. Stonebwoy joins other African acts on the label’s roster, including Stogie T, Cassper Nyovest, Nadia Nakai, Nasty C, Tellaman and Vector.
