Platoon honours SA artists with Heritage Month mural
Apple-owned artist development company Platoon has unveiled a mural depicting musicians Simphiwe Dana, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Mandisi Dyantyis and Nobuhle to mark Heritage Month in South Africa.
The mural is courtesy of renowned South African artist Dbongz Mahlathi. It is on display in Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg to honour the aforementioned artists for their cultural contribution to the local music industry.
“Never in a million years I would have thought this can happen to me,” Nobuhle told Music In Africa. “The mural reveal was an affirmation to my dreams of being around the best of the best. I’m so glad it happened in celebration of Heritage Month because I am from a very traditional background. I feel celebrated for who I am.
“The cherry on top of the cake was being there in a painting with artists I’ve looked up to throughout my career. I am excited that people will get to pass by and look at my painted face and feel proud of being African. No words will be enough, but thank you.”
Dbongz said the mural was a result of his love for local music and added that it sent “a message of staying true to one’s self. Taking motivation and courage from the walks of the ones who walked before us. Knowing our roots in order for us to be bold when presenting our narratives and truths to the world.”
The musicians
Simphiwe Dana is credited for creating some of the most thought-provoking songs of her generation. She is known for being a messenger for love, hope, humanitarianism and socio-political awareness. Her music is influenced by older-generation South African artists like Miriam Makeba and Dorothy Masuka.
Bongeziwe Mabandla is renowned for combining traditional motifs and electronica. He has earned a reputation as one of the hardest-working performers in South African music, travelling extensively and performing all over the world, including in Japan, Australia, Europe and the US.
Likewise, Mandisi Dyantyis has established himself on the local scene with his magnificent voice and trumpet, paying tribute to legends of the past while delivering heartfelt messages with jazz and gospel compositions. Nobuhle’s career, meanwhile, is on a fast rise, having been the vocal powerhouse for electronic producers such as Kabza De Small and Sun-El Musician.
