Ghana: Moliy shares new single ahead of Honey Doom EP

‘Hard’ was produced by MikeMillzOnEm and is themed around women's empowerment. It heralds her forthcoming EP Honey Doom, due on 19 October. ‘Hard’ is infused with hip hop and Afrobeats.

Moliy’s vocal style is soft and psychedelic, and her musical approach is inspired by experiences from her childhood spent between Accra and Orlando, Florida, where she was exposed to everything from Afrobeats to reggae, soul, jazz and hip hop.

"After hearing time and time again how men tend to over-sexualise women in songs, I decided it’s time women take the reins and now we’re going to say how this goes," Moliy told Music In Africa.

On collaborating with Moonchild Sanelly, she said: "I’ve always wanted to work with Moon, she’s so amazing and has that energy that this track needed." 

Moliy is best known for her appearance on Amaarae’s 2020 single ‘Sad Gurlz Luv Money (Remix)’ with Kali Uchis. The record debuted at number 80 on the US Billboard Hot 100. In June, Spotify announced the singer as an ambassador for its Equal Africa programme.

According to Moliy, Honey Doom, which follows her 2020 debut EP Wondergirl, will feature some of her most vulnerable storytelling to date. She added that the project tracks her personal development as a young woman unpacking love and relationships alongside her own experimental journey with her sound, which remains otherworldly, airy and optimistic, but with more global influences.
