African DJs to zoom in on altè and bongo flava at ACCES 2022
Tanzania’s DJ Joozey and Ghana’s Kobby Ankomah Graham will deliver interactive music presentations at the 2022 Music In Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases (ACCES) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 25 and 26 November.
ACCES 2022’s interactive music presentations form part of a wide range activities at the pan-African music conference, which will also feature panel discussions, workshops, networking activities, exhibitions, awards and music performances.
Running for 30 minutes each, this year’s interactive presentations will see the two cultural experts and music connoisseurs track the evolution and development of prominent Tanzanian genre bongo flava and West African alternative music (altè).
DJ Joozey’s bongo flava presentation will take place at Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre on 25 November at 2pm while Kobby Graham’s altè session will happen at the same venue on 26 November at 1.15pm. The presentations are free to attend but registration is mandatory on a first-come, first-served basis.
DJ Joozey will explore bongo flava’s humble beginnings and its subsequent infusion of South African amapiano, Nigerian Afrobeats and American trap. He will take the audience on an audio-visual journey through the history of the genre, its signature sound and its noteworthy game changers.
Graham, meanwhile, will look at altè as a response to its more popular cousin, Afrobeats, and delve into the history and sonic elements that distinguish the genre while taking stock of its social relevance over the years.
“I’m honoured for the opportunity to present at ACCES,” Graham told Music In Africa. “I am both a DJ and an academic doing PhD research into alternative music and what it has to say about society, primarily in Ghana, but in ways that I think will be relevant to other cities as well. I’m looking forward to presenting to the ACCES crowd and interacting with and hearing what artists and artist-affiliated people from all over Africa have to say about the rise of alternative African music.”
