Call for applications: Nafasi Art Space Artist in Residence programme in Tanzania
Nafasi Art Space in Tanzania is calling on artists to apply for its 2023 Artist-in-Residence (AIR) programme.
The programme is open to artists of different nationalities and gender in all disciplines, including painters, sculptors, welders, printmakers, performers, dancers, musicians, video artists and photographers. Writers, curators and researchers are also encouraged to apply.
Nafasi Art Space, located in Mikocheni B, Dar es Salaam, is a thriving multi-disciplinary contemporary art centre that seeks to further and enrich human potential through the arts. Nafasi is set in extensive open grounds consisting of studios, gallery and exhibition spaces, an art academy, film amphitheatre, art library, supply shop, music rehearsal space and more.
It hosts regular diverse exhibitions, festivals, workshops, talks and wider public engagement events aimed at providing access, engagement, and participation in the arts.
The AIR programme’s objective is to create a critical learning environment and to stimulate the discovery and creation of contemporary art in Tanzania, through production and an open exchange within the region and beyond. 12-15 artists per year are typically accepted for participation in the residency programme.
For the coming year, several funded residencies are available to artists based on the African continent, and additional self-funded residency opportunities.
Upon acceptance, letters of invitation and other documentation that may help artists fundraise for the residency costs (such as studio fees, accommodation, visa applications, materials, transport, and food) will be provided.
Nafasi provides selected residents with curatorial and administrative support, connections and opportunities to collaborate and interact with Tanzanian artists and audiences, and promotion for artist talks and open studio/exhibitions organised during the residency.
Read full guidelines before applying here.
Before uploading documents, please use this format to name them: Name_CV/Bio, Name_Portfolio, Name_Motivation, etc.
The deadline for application is 31 October 2022 and decisions will be announced in December.
Note: Incomplete or partial applications will not be considered. Selection will be made by a jury and selected artists will be contacted with detailed information on the residency including practical information on visa, health insurance requirements and any other documentation required.
