Call for applications: The Market Theatre Foundation internship positions
The Market Theatre Foundation, in partnership with Yes4Youth, is inviting candidates to submit applications for internship positions.
The successful applicants will have a 12-month fixed contract and will earn R5 000 per month. The money will help them to benefit from being associated with and gaining hands on experience at the prestigious and world-renowned cultural institution in the Market Theatre Foundation as well as a dynamic, innovative and lateral thinking creative.
By taking up the various internship positions offered by the Market Theatre Foundation the successful interns will work with interesting colleagues, learn a wide range of skills that will provide invaluable work experience. They will possibly connect with people who could offer future permanent career opportunities in the creative arts industries as well as in alternate career fields.

Stage manager X2
(Ref: 2022/11/STM)
Successful incumbent will assist stage managers to ensure that every assigned production is stage managed efficiently and effectively to a predefined process and procedure as documented in the Stage Managers manual. Ensure efficient and effective management of the communication channels between stakeholders and act in the best interest of the company.
Position requires:
- Degree/diploma performing arts, relevant theatre qualifications.
- Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment.
- Able to work under pressure.
Sound technician intern
(Ref: 2022/11/ST)
The incumbent will be a member of the Market Theatre’s professional technical production team and be involved in the staging of Market Theatre productions specifically from a sound perspective. The applicant will be working with Market Theatre’s sound technician to do set ups for events, productions and outside events, applicant will require technical experience in sound engineering, sound set up, patching and mixing.
Position requires:
- Degree/diploma in sound technology/engineering, performing arts.
- This position will suit a sound engineering graduate or a person with previous sound experience.
- Programming cues with a mixing console for a shows or events.
- Operating analogue or digital mixing consoles for shows and events.
Lighting intern

The successful incumbent will be part of the technical department team where they will assist to hang lights, focus, programme, repair, trouble shoot any problems that may arise and operate lights for all events/shows and conferences at the Market Theatre Foundation.
Position requires:
- Operating lighting desks and cues during technical get in and performances and efficiently operating effects equipment as per SM cues.
- Read and interpret light plots, cue sheets, and other technical documents.
- Assist in the load – in and load – out of lighting in the theatre venue.
- Applying technical knowledge of lighting to achieve the determined artistic objectives.
- Repairing or replacing light bulbs or tubes in light fixtures, or replacing entire light fixture when needed.
Receptionist

Generic front office management and reception services, attend to visitors and deal with enquiries on the phone and face to face. Supply information regarding the organisation to the general public, clients and customers. Filing, records management and administrative functions.
Position requires:
- Diploma in office admin or equivalent knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures.
- Knowledge of computers and relevant software application.
- Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
- People and communication skills.
- Ability to operate a switchboard.
Box office admin intern

The incumbent will work in the producer’s office and gain in-depth knowledge of the administration behind professional theatrical productions.
Position requires:
- Matric and certificate in bookkeeping/customer service.
- Ticket sales.
- Banking.
- Record management and administrative functions.
- Weekly reporting of sales to management.
Social media intern x3
(Ref: 2022/11/SOM)
The incumbent will join the Market Theatre Foundation’s overall brand and communications team. The incumbent will work closely within the MTF’s team to communicate effectively with external stakeholders through publicity, and involved in various activities concerning the organisation’s visibility, awareness and promotion of content starting from PR, social media, events, and content creation. Ultimately, serve as the face and voice of our brand and manage all community communications.
Position requires:
- Basic knowledge of campaign management from conceptualisation to execution.
- Awareness of the nature and role of theatre and entertainment industries.
- Hands on experience with social media monitoring.
- Ability to interpret social media traffic, impressions, target and audience.
- Knowledge of online marketing.
- A relevant degree/diploma in marketing, brand communications, media studies.
Library assistant

Library assistants are responsible for sorting and shelving books according to their categorisation, assisting customers with internet access and ensuring their technical needs are met. They also manage inquiries over the counter, via email or telephone, among other duties.
Position requires:
- Helping students and colleagues locate books.
- Checking books in and out at the front desk.
- Sorting and shelving books according to their categorisation.
- Maintaining records of books taken out and books brought back.
- Cataloguing new arrivals.
Marketing assistant

The applicant will be a member of the Market Theatre Foundation’s Brand & Communications team and will work towards growing an audience base for the Market Theatre. The applicants will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic marketing and sales related environment. The applicant will have the opportunity to interact with the general public as well as educational institutions in promoting and finding audiences for Market Theatre productions.
Position requires:
- A marketing degree or equivalent qualification is essential for this internship.
- Good communication skills.
- Target driven.
- Ability to cope with rejection.
- Ability to remain calm in fast-paced environments.
- Structured individual, with good time management.
Research and archiving x2
(Ref: 2022/11/RAA)
The incumbent will assist to co-ordinate the development of archive and research programming for the Market Photo Workshop. This position supports the public programming and administrative capacities of projects and courses, exhibitions, research and the Photo Workshop library.
Position requires:
- Tertiary qualification in humanities (qualification in photography, visual and heritage archives will be advantageous).
- Computer skills (Mac and PC, Excel and Word, e-mail).
- Be driven and passionate about photography and the importance of archives for South Africa’s future.
- Be able to work under pressure, unsupervised and show strong initiative.
- Show a critical awareness of the nature and role of photography, archives in general, and of the education and development landscape for African practitioners.
- Background and understanding of arts, culture and heritage-related industries will be advantageous.
Technical assistant

The successful applicant will assist to develop and maintain effective technical processes to ensure internal and external satisfaction.
Position requires:
- Degree/diploma in performing arts or relevant theatre qualifications.
- Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment.
- Maintains all department equipment and ensure they conform to all maintenance and service procedures and are in good working order.
- Programming cues with a mixing console for shows or events.
- Knowledge of sound/lighting.
Supply chain management

The successful candidate will be performing specific administrative tasks in relation to the acquisition of goods and services within the department in compliance with the city government’s procurement policies and practices.
Position requires:
- National diploma/degree or diploma related to supply chain management.
- Acquire quotations in compliance with guidelines stated in the procurement policy.
- Facilitate gathering and return of quotations to project managers to allow assessment of responses and finalise the selection of service providers.
- Keep track of control documentation, business procedures and processes in relation to supplier requirements and applications.
Maintenance intern

The successful incumbent will be assisting the handyman performing multiple maintenance tasks throughout the day.
Position requires:
- Experience with hardware tools and electrical equipment.
- Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems.
- Basic maths skills.
- Good communication skills.
- Health and safety experience will be advantageous.
Applicant requirements
- 21-35 years.
- 12 months fixed term contract – 1 January 2023-31 December 2023.
- Applicants need to register on the Yes Youth here.
- Proof of Yes Youth registration – screen shot will suffice.
- Certificated copy of ID and affidavit stating that the applicant is currently unemployed prior to commencing the programme.
- Copy of CV with reference’s contact details and three years completed degree/diploma from a recognised institution of higher learning in the Republic of South Africa.
- Knowledge of or an interest in the creative arts would be an advantage but is not a requirement.
