Rebecca Corey

Bio

Rebecca Corey is the director of a not-for-profit Tanzania Heritage Project (THP) in Tanzania. She is co-founded the project in 2011.

THP is a culture preservation initiative that seeks to revitalize and celebrate Tanzanian heritage music, especially through the digitization of reel-to-reel archives. In 2009 she studied at the University of Dar es Salaam’s Institute of Development Studies. Between 2012 and 2014, she served as the executive director of Busara Promotions, the NGO behind Sauti za Busara music festival in Zanzibar. She is also an advisor to Santuri Safari, an East African project that facilitates the production of innovative music by bringing together traditional musicians and electronic music producers.

Rebecca has worked on the production side of a handful of film and TV projects, including a series on social entrepreneurship shot for the BBC, a short film for the Yale Visual Epidemiology Lab on musicians living with HIV, and the 10th anniversary Sauti za Busara short film. As of 2017, she was co-directing and producing a feature documentary film about the history of Tanzanian music called ‘Wahenga’, which is supported by the DOCUBOX EA Documentary Film Fund.
