Call for applications: Chale Wote Street Art Festival in Ghana
The organisers of the annual Chale Wote Street Art Festival in Ghana are inviting applications from artists ahead of the 2023 edition in Jamestown district, Accra, from 21 to 27 August.
Produced by Accra[dot]Alt, Chale Wote was first held in 2011 and serves as an alternative platform for art and performance, bringing music, art and dance out into the streets and serving as an interface for exchange between local and international artists and patrons.
Running under the theme, Magneto Motherland, this year’s festival will “investigate how historical movements have embedded themselves into popular consciousness, affirming the inevitable solidarity with the global south for its complete and unconditional sovereignty.”
The open call applies to both Ghana-based and international musicians, visual and installation artists, interventionists, makers, photographers, performance artists, filmmakers, thespians, poets, architects, fashion designers, graphic designers, scholars and more.
The festival will also accept proposals for talks, workshops, panel discussions and film screenings. It will accept existing and new works that are in accordance with this year’s theme.
Artists are encouraged to use a variety of disciplines like video art, sculpture, music, performance, design, fashion, animation, architecture, installation, dance, literature, photography and film to create works that shed light on this ecology from various perspectives. Artist statements, CVs, theme-related notes and logistical needs must be attached for applications to be considered.
How to apply
- Artists and collectives who already have work that aligns with the theme can also submit.
- Applications that contain plagiarised works will be disqualified.
- Film works should be submitted in 1:85:1 and or 2:39:1 formats, and must include a synopsis, trailers and still images from the film.
- Audio works should be submitted in MP3 format, with supporting still images or video.
- All photography and image-related works must be submitted as JPEGs.
- Musicians and bands must attach technical riders to applications in order to be considered.
NOTE: International artists are encouraged to seek funding in their home countries to support their participation (flights, accommodation, logistical resources and insurance). Chale Wote will provide support teams for artists to aid production of works as well as transportation during the festival period.
Interested participants can send an email to chalewote@accradotaltradio.com.
