Ghana: Amaarae drops Reckless and Sweet single
Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae today released a new single titled ‘Reckless & Sweet’ ahead of her upcoming sophomore album Fountain Baby. The song is available for streaming and download on major digital platforms.
The offering blends Arabic and Indian melodies with African drum beats in an exploration of toxic love. Specifically, the record discusses the idea of being taken advantage of in a relationship.
The song’s attending music video presents stylised vignettes featuring Amaarae as the protagonist, alongside models Leomie Anderson and Monyjok Ngor Deng portraying the lead love interests.
“Coming back after so long, I had a lot of time to think and reflect on what I wanted my message to be. The last time it was about confidence, this time it is about love and faith,” Amaarae said of the new release. “This is my sexiest video to date and what I love most about it is that young black women and men are about to see what our new energy is for 2023 and beyond.”
Amaarae added that the project is “about being intentional with the ways we make and give love. It’s about finding the inner sensuality and confidence and sharing that with the world. As an artist that is exactly where I’m at at the moment.”
Amaarae is widely popular within Nigeria's alté scene, and her artistic vision revolves around promoting female empowerment. Her work is heavily influenced by her West African heritage and seeks to challenge societal views on gender norms, female sexuality, and artistic self-expression.
Meanwhile, the musician, who is behind indie label Golden Child Entertainment, has revealed that her next album, Fountain Baby, is due later this year, and will be released soon under Interscope Records. The project’s 2020 predecessor, The Angel You Don’t Know, includes popular singles such as ‘Jumping Ship’ featuring Kojey Radical and Cruel Santino, ‘Fancy’ and ‘Sad Girlz Luv Money’.
