Tanzania: Mbosso surpasses 200 million streams on Boomplay
Tanzanian singer and songwriter Mbosso is the latest East African artist to amass over 200 million streams on Africa-facing music service Boomplay.
The bongo flava artist attained the milestone thanks to the popularity of his recent albums, Khan (2022) and Definition of Love (2021), cementing his stay in the coveted Boomplay’s Golden Club. The Golden Club houses artists who have clocked and surpassed 100 million streams.
The artist, known for his sentimental offerings, garnered the numbers seven months after receiving 100 million streams on the app, solidifying his position as one of the leading artists in Tanzania.
The feat means Mbosso is now part of an elite group of Tanzanian artists such as Diamond Platnumz, Zuchu, Rayvanny and Harmonize who have registered more than 200 million streams on Boomplay.
“Congratulations Mbosso for attaining over 200 million streams,” Boomplay announced on social media.
Other top African musicians in the Golden Club include Black Sherif, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Fireboy DML, Joeboy and Omah Lay.
Mbosso is one of WCB Wasafi’s most successful artists. His deeply romantic Swahili songs and use of Bollywood tropes in videos have earned him a huge following not only in East Africa but also in the Middle East and India.
Born Mbwana Yusuph Kilungi in Dar es Salaam, Mbosso was part of a popular boy group Yamoto Band before signing to WCB Wasafi in 2017. His hits include ‘Hodari’, ‘Baikoko’, ‘Nadekezwa’, ‘Tamu’ and ‘Tamba’, all of which have accumulated more than 40 million views on YouTube.
