Nigeria: Kaduna Entertainment Awards names nominees

The organisers of the Kaduna Entertainment Awards have released a list of nominees ahead of its 2017 ceremony at the Afrinet Bluebreeze Centre in Kaduna, Nigeria, on 17 November.

Now in its fourth year, the awards were designed to celebrate outstanding musicians in northern Nigeria. The organisers have already named the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Funkiest Mallam, a pioneer of rap and hip hop, will be handed the award for his deployment of Hausa and humour, which has influenced the current crop of northern Nigerian rappers including ClassiQ, Lyrical Dr Smith, Morrell, Boc and Lil Ameer.

“Funkiest Mallam is one of the entertainers who set up the pedestal for the viable entertainment industry that we have today,” a statement from Kaduna Entertainment Awards director Kevin Adams said.

“He went all out to make his voice, a voice for all and today. You can’t write the history of music in northern Nigeria without the likes of Funkiest Mallam. And if he did that much, we say thank you sir, for what you have envisaged is here and we are grateful to you for making yourself available and an instrument.”

The public will vote on the awards website for nominated artists in the different categories.
