Kenya: Wahu explains secular to gospel shift
After the debut of 'Sifa', Kenyan musician Wahu Kagwi has revealed that she is taking her music in a different direction. In the music video, the artist praises God who has not only been good to her but has defeated her enemies, too.
With hits like 'Liar', 'Running Low' and 'Yeye', Wahu has been a household name in the secular music scene for more than a decade. Over the years, she has worked with artists such as Cindy Sanyu, Chege, Sudi Boy and Susan Owiyo.
Talking to Mpasho News on 14 November, Wahu revealed that she wrote 'Sifa' during a low point in her life. She said that while having a conversation with God, she remembered words she had read from the scriptures and David who wrote Psalms praising Him, despite the challenges that he’d been going through.
The artist, who said she had been saved for a long time, even while singing secular music, believes that it is time she started walking the whole journey with God, and not just pick the bits and pieces that only appealed to her.
“I am happy about where I am right now because I believe that we all have a purpose," she said. "Everyone has a purpose and for us to completely access it, talk to the guy who made you.
The artist said fans should expect more gospel tracks, even though it’s too early to know who she will work with on her new music. “I can’t talk about collaborations; I am just happy to be writing my own material at the moment,” Wahu said.
