Burna Boy beats 1 billion Boom-plays
Months after reaching 1 billion streams on Audiomack, Nigerian singer Burna Boy has repeated a similar feat on Africa-facing streaming service Boomplay.
The digital service provider, which boasts more than 90 million monthly active users and a catalogue of over 100 million songs, confirmed the milestone on 5 September. It said no other artist had reached the milestone before Burna Boy, making him Boomplay’s first Platinum Club inductee.
Before his latest achievement, which has been powered by the musician’s latest album I Told Them, Burna Boy was among a handful of African acts in Boomplay’s Golden Club, which also includes Ghana’s Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Black Sherif, Sarkodie and Camidoh, fellow Nigerians, Wizkid, Davido and Fireboy DML, and Tanzania’s Diamond Platinumz and Rayvanny.
The development means that Burna Boy amassed an incredible 800 million streams since February when Boomplay reported that the artist had hit 200 million plays.
Last week, I Told Them secured the musician his first UK No 1 chart position, and on Sunday he clinched three awards at the 2023 Headies, making him the biggest winner on the night alongside Rema.
I Told Them also received the most first-week streams for an African album on Apple Music in 100 countries.
