Mzansi Youth Choir earns slot in America’s Got Talent finale
South African music ensemble Mzansi Youth Choir has made it to the finale of Season 18 of America’s Got Talent (AGT) after performing a rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Everywhere’.
As a result of its tribute to the late American singer Nightbirde in the semi-finals, Mzansi Youth Choir received the golden buzzer, guaranteeing it a spot in the finale alongside Lavender Darcangelo, Adrian Stoica & Hurricane, Murmuration, Ahren Belisle and Putri Ariani.
The same song was performed by the late Jane Marczewski, better known as Nightbirde, during the 16th season of AGT. However, she was unable to progress to the next round after withdrawing due to a battle with cancer.
“It's been a week,” Mzansi Youth Choir wrote on social media. “Still cannot believe we went from auditioning @AGT, to performing in the semi-finals and now have the chance to perform at finals for. The chance of a lifetime.”
AGT wrote: “Congratulations, Mzansi Youth Choir and Putri Ariani. They’re headed to AGT’s finale.”
In their comments, judges Heidi Klum and Sophie Vergara spoke highly of the choir’s outfits, make-up and stage presence, while Simon Cowell said: “I believe this act is outstanding. You can’t help but be drawn in by your enthusiasm and performance style. It’s a cliché, but this stage may make or break you. Tonight, you were made.”
The top 11 acts will battle in the finale on 26 and 27 September before two finalists are selected.
Meanwhile, another South African group Ndlovu Youth Choir released its version of the Rugby World Cup anthem ‘World in Union’ on 8 September. The song, which seeks to spread the message of hope, love and unity, was released ahead of the 2023 tournament which is currently underway in France. Before that, singer Mgarimbe released ‘Sister Bokkina’ – a song which is being used as the South African national rugby team’s anthem. The track copies Mgarimbe’s ‘Sister Bethina’ single but with new lyrics.
