SA: Joy of Jazz to host music workshops
The organisers of Standard Bank Joy of Jazz (JOJ) festival will host music workshops at Joburg Theatre, South Africa, on 26 September.
The workshops are designed to empower young musicians around Gauteng Province and are part of the festival’s skills and audience development programme. They seek to harness the festival’s ability to access world-class musicians and create an environment that gives young people a chance to meet and learn from some of the headline artists performing at the festival.
Running under the theme The Influence of Jazz in Other Music Genres, the workshops will focus on community development and remain central to the festival’s vision and mission as it continues to claw itself back from the effects of the pandemic years. They seek to carry on the festival’s commitment to community development and youth empowerment through learning.
The workshops will be facilitated by renowned jazz artists as follows:
- Carlo Mombelli – Pulses in the Centre of Silence: 10am to 10.50am.
- Titi Luzipo and Billy Monama – Rhythm: 11am to 11.50am.
- Nothemba Madumo and DJ Khenziro – Jazz in Hip Hop: 1pm to 1.50pm.
- Zoë Modiga – Harmony 2pm to 2.50pm.
Young people who are unable to attend the workshops physically will be able to access them online. The festival will stream the programme live across its various social media platforms.
Meanwhile, JOJ will be held at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on 29 and 30 September. It will be headlined by Grammy Award-winning Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider and local musicians Ayanda Nhlangothi, Vusi Nhlapo and Vuyo Tshuma.
