Call for auditions: Chicago – the Musical

Everyone is welcome to audition for the production and auditions will run from 10am to 6pm daily. Applicants can decide whether they want to audition as background dancers (all dance auditionees) or leading actors (principal auditionees).

Participants should email a current one-page CV and a picture by not later than 20 January to showtime@iafrica.com. They must also bring their CVs and a recent photo to the audition call.

All dance auditionees requirements

• All ages, strong, athletic dancers with good singing voices and acting skills are encouraged to come for auditions.
• All dancers must be prepared to do ballet and jazz combinations and must bring appropriate clothing.
• Participants who qualify for the next rounds will only be asked to sing.
• All participants should bring sheet music and present a song of their own choice in a traditional musical theatre style that best shows off their vocal capabilities and range.
• The sheet music should be appropriately cut with clear indications for the accompanist.
• No pop or rock. Absolutely no acapella or other form of accompaniment is allowed.

Principal auditionees requirements

• All principal auditionees are encouraged to listen to Chicago – the Musical CD and familiarise themselves with the music of the production.

Participants who want to audition as principal characters of the musical will play the following characters:

Roxie Hart (25-45 years): An innocent with the ability to murder sexy and funny. The actress must be a dancer in the Bob Fosse style, with a big, first-rate Broadway belt voice.

Velma Kelly (25-45 years): A sarcastic, extremely sexy, tough, funny murderer with a keen eye for publicity. The actress must be a dancer in the Bob Fosse style, with a big, first-rate Broadway belt voice.

Billy Flynn (38-60 years): A suave, educated lawyer who can talk and wheedle, and persuade anyone to do anything. His clients literally get away with murder. Actor must be sexy, handsome, charming and masculine as well as have a wonderful baritone voice and move well.

Amos Hart (38-58 years): The character must be a charming, funny, vulnerable, milquetoast of a man, and so in love with his wife that he would mortgage anything to pay for her outrageous extravagances. Must sing well and be physically adept – a comic-sad character actor.

Matron ‘Mama’ Morton (37-55 years): A great belt voice, sexy, funny, powerful and tough character actress.

Mary Sunshine (any age): A male soprano or countertenor who can sing legitimately up to a high B flat. Must play a woman who acts like a good-natured talk show hostess, but is actually a high-powered gossip columnist. Actor must be a good comedian and a great legit singer.
