Tanzania: Ongala Music Festival announces 2023 dates, artist line-up
The organisers of Ongala Music Festival (OMF) in Tanzania have announced that the 2023 edition will take place at Velisa’s Jamaican Restaurant in Kawe beach, Dar es Salaam, from 24 to 26 November.
Since its inception in 2018, OMF has grown to become one of the most significant arts and cultural events in Tanzania – promoting cultural exchange, creativity and community engagement.
This three-day extravaganza pays homage to the man the festival has been named after: the late Tanzanian musician Remmy Ongala, described as a futurist, an activist and even a cultural icon. The festival was founded by the musician’s daughter Aziza Ongala.
Featuring a line-up of predominantly Tanzanian artists and DJs, OMG 2023 will take the audience on a journey through Tanzania’s soundscapes. From traditional rhythms to contemporary beats, the festival will serve as a platform for established and emerging artists.
The festivities kick off on Friday, 24 November with an invite-only networking event dubbed Creatives’ Connect aimed at fostering collaboration and camaraderie among creatives. This unique opportunity provides a space for artists, producers and other enthusiasts to exchange ideas, form connections and pave the way for future artistic endeavours.
On 25 and 26 November, the gates open at 10am with a range of activities on offer including children’s shows, stage productions, drumming sessions and more. Festivalgoers will also get a chance to sample local cuisine, art, fashion and even get a chance to immortalise the moments at Kwa Remmy photo booth.
The heart of the festival beats strongest in the evenings with performances from an array of musicians. Audiences can expect a journey through diverse genres, showcasing Tanzania’s rich musical heritage.
The final day of the festival will feature an original play titled Ongala na Uhuru performed by students from Uhuru Community Centre. This theatrical showcase weaves together culture, storytelling and creativity.
