Call for entries: Young Performer Awards SA
National Eisteddfod of South Africa is calling on young artists to apply for the 2018 edition of the National Eisteddfod Young Performer Awards.
- The event provides a platform where young performers can compete and showcase their talents.
The application form for the awards is available for download and the submission deadline is 9 February.
The Young Performer Awards competition takes place over four elimination rounds, with participants adjudicated by a panel of experts in the following categories:
- Classical and crossover music (vocal and instrumental)
- Contemporary music (vocal and instrumental)
- Speech and drama
- Dance
Now in its 15th edition, the event will be held at the Roodepoort Theatre as follows:
- First round (19 February – 17 March)
- Quarter finals (22 – 27 March)
- Semi-finals (9 – 12 May)
- Finals (19 May)
Rules and regulations
- Only diploma-level candidates in the National Eisteddfod of 2017 (or similar achievements in other festivals) may enter.
- This competition will be presented at the Roodepoort Theatre and will comprise four rounds.
- A panel of adjudicators will adjudicate all events and their decision will be final.
- No changes in the schedule will be allowed (see the website for more details).
- Participants that opt for a video recorded entry must adhere to the specific requirements for recorded entries as provided on the website (no recordings of performances at other events will be accepted).
- All participants should submit an entry form and proof of payment before the closing date for entries.
- A copy of the certificate/report confirming the achievement in another festival must be submitted with the entry form.
- Two options are available for adjudication in the first round only. Participants should select one of these options on the entry form. Click here for more.
First round rules
Participants may enter and participate as follows:
- Live performance: The participant(s) will be required to perform live at the Roodepoort Theatre according to the schedule that will be provided for the first round.
- Video recorded entry: A participant will be required to submit a video recording of his/her performance for adjudication in the first round.
Founded by the National Eisteddfod Academy, the competition provides a high-level national platform where the best young performers in music, dance and drama, as identified at various festivals and competitions, can compete and showcase their talents. This year’s participants stand a chance to win up to R100 000 ($8 400) in prizes.
“The achievements, locally and internationally, of previous winners and top achievers in this competition are testimony to the high level at which this competition has been presented since it was founded 15 years ago,” National Eisteddfod Academy CEO Dr Francois van den Berg said.
