M. Rumbi unveils Whispers of the Soul EP
South Africa-based Kenyan indie artist M. Rumbi has released his latest EP Whispers of the Soul. The four-track project – now available for streaming and download – marks the start of a yearlong musical odyssey in line with M. Rumbi’s plan to release an EP in a different genre every second month of the year, accompanied by a single each preceding month.
Described as a soulful journey through love and reflection, Whispers of the Soul is characterised by M. Rumbi’s minimalist production style, placing a significant focus on vocals. The tracks are guitar-driven, with occasional strings to complement the overall atmosphere.
M. Rumbi collaborates with four vocalists on the EP, namely mphilo (Kenya), Incachi (US), Jade Garisch (South Africa) and Andyah (Kenya). The artists create an absorbing and emotional dynamic as they bring a unique flavour to this offering, each contributing their distinctive style.
All songs are written and sung by M. Rumbi, who also handles the guitar, while the vocalists learn and perform the songs based on M. Rumbi’s compositions. The EP is produced under the moniker theNairobiNomad. It draws inspiration from M. Rumbi’s previous tracks, such as ‘Less’, ‘More’ and ‘Closure’, with the artist aiming to create a sound that resonates with listeners by leaning into a specific style that has garnered significant appreciation.
“On Whispers of the Soul, each track is a chapter and the collective narrative echoes the profound stories within us all,” the singer’s team said. “M. Rumbi's musical talent invites you to immerse yourself in a sonic experience that transcends the ordinary, resonating with the whispers of your own soul.”
The opening track, 'Sunny Everyday’, sets the tone with its vibrant rhythm, masking the profound introspection beneath the surface. It's a symphony of contradiction – upbeat in sound yet laden with the weight of internal struggles. The artist’s raw vulnerability unfolds, inviting the listener to peel back the layers of facade we often wear in the face of adversity.
On ‘Grey’, M. Rumbi unveils a tender vulnerability, a sonic embrace that cradles the listener with its soothing melody. The song delves into the complexities of an emotional struggle within a relationship. The artist's evocative lyrics paint a poignant picture of a partner grappling with moments of sadness and weariness, capturing the enigmatic grey that shrouds her spirit.
The other tracks on the collection are ‘Just Stop’ featuring Jade Garisch and ‘It’s You’ done in collaboration with Andyah. ‘Just Stop’ is an indie-soul ballad that explores the depths of despair and shattered dreams. The lyrics, laden with a plea to cease and an acknowledgment of being ‘not on top’, paint a vivid picture of a soul grappling with the harsh reality of unfulfilled aspirations.
‘Its You’ navigates the intricate dance of desire and temptation. The minimalist yet impactful repetition of ‘It's you, it's you’ sets the tone for a contemplative exploration of lingering thoughts and the magnetic pull of a past connection.
M. Rumbi explores love across genres and styles. His discography showcases versatility and flexibility with projects such as Groove Mosaic, See Me. Si Me. Reimagined and Closure. M. Rumbi is known for collaborations with diverse artists, embracing the idea of “community over competition”.
Following the release of Whispers of the Soul, M. Rumbi will be gearing up for the Echoes of Farewell, the next EP for the year, with the first and only single, ‘Jane’, to be unveiled in the coming months.
