Namibia: Sir Ray to play NUTS concert on 5 April
Goethe-Institut Namibia will host Zimbabwean instrumentalist Sir Ray at its Night Under the Stars (NUTS) concert series in Windhoek on 5 April.
With a profound passion for traditional and folk music, Sir Ray views his performance as an opportunity to share the rich narrative of Africa and its Bantu people. One of the highlights of Sir Ray’s performance is his mastery of the mbira – an instrument steeped in the cultural heritage of Zimbabwe. Describing its melodic tones, he compares its sound to “water dropping in a pond.”
“This is a significant moment for me as it allows me to articulate the essence of African storytelling,” Sir Ray said. “My show aims to honour the musical legacy of seasoned music industry veterans, reinterpreting their work through my own lens.”
Employing innovative techniques such as live looping, Sir Ray effortlessly invites the audience to immerse themselves in the rhythmic tapestry of his music. Drawing from a wealth of experience acquired from performances on stages worldwide, his musical journey reflects the diverse influences and cultures he has encountered.
“Inspiration knows no boundaries, so I always keep an instrument close at hand – even on bus rides,” he said.
Sir Ray is currently working on his debut EP, which seeks to recognise the importance of digital platforms for artist visibility. “To thrive in today’s music landscape, it’s essential for artists to share their music with the world through streaming platforms,” he said.
Sir Ray’s show will mark the second NUTS event this year after a performance by Namibian artist NaJah on 2 February.
