Nigeria: Josplay inks deal with Premier Records
African music intelligence company Josplay has announced a partnership with Nigeria-based Premier Records.
The agreement grants Josplay users access to Premier Records’ vast catalogue, spanning '90s classics and contemporary music. Additionally, it will facilitate creative projects like remixes, samples and artist collaborations.
In operation for 60 years, the record label, launched as Phillips West Africa Records, has undergone name changes, including Phonogram Records and Polygram Records, and has been instrumental in launching the careers of Nigerian music veterans like Sir Victor Uwaifo, Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson, Celestine Ukwu, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha and Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe.
“At Josplay, we’re passionate about promoting the origins of African musical culture,” Josplay co-founder and COO Jideofor Okoro said. “Partnering with Premier Records allows us to introduce a whole new generation to the iconic sounds that shaped Nigerian music, while simultaneously creating a platform for fresh collaborations that bridge the generational gap. This endeavour can only be possible with the advanced music intelligence Josplay possesses”
“Premier Records has always been at the forefront of discovering and nurturing talent,” Premier Records head Michael Odiong said.“This partnership with Josplay allows us to share our legacy with a wider audience while providing a platform for our artists to connect and collaborate with the next wave of African music stars.”
Josplay is behind the African Music Library social project, a unified database aimed at providing the global music industry with the most accurate and comprehensive understanding of African music.
Premier Records, meanwhile, is readying the release of new music throughout the year. In a recent interview with Business Day, Odiong attributed the company’s 60-year success to its adaptability and embrace of innovation and creativity.
“In all these [years], we have been consistent in keeping to the cultural values of Nigerian music,” he said. “We make sure all genres of music from across the country are accommodated.”
