Tekno gets Universal Music distribution deal
Nigerian pop act Tekno has signed a distribution deal with Universal Music Group.
This comes after the singer’s single ‘Pana’ was rereleased by Columbia Records last year.
The deal is also a major one for Universal, which has held African ambitions, announcing the continent in 2015 as one of the regions with “high-potential markets for music”. In the same year, the company signed a deal with Burna Boy, who declared himself as, “the first contemporary Nigerian act to sign to #Island #Universal”.
Burna Boy went on to release the album Outside under Island Records last year, perhaps a good sign for Tekno fans awaiting the debut project of the star.
“I am extremely excited to sign with UMG as I’m ready to take my music to new heights, have a platform to showcase my versatility, push my music and ideas, and show the world how diverse African music and musicians can be,” said Tekno “I want the Tekno brand to reach the global stage. Being with a full team in Nigeria, in Africa, and working with Alex and Island UK means that there are machines in place to ensure my music is delivered to my fans and the world with the best quality possible.”
Tekno’s comment about delivering music to fans around the world was echoed by Alex Boateng of Island Records. “Tekno is special as an artist and music maker,” the president of the urban arm of Island Records said. “It is an absolute pleasure to now be a part of his journey and help him reach the international status his talent deserves. Island is the best place in the industry for culture and creativity so it is a privilege to provide the perfect home for him.”
While it is not certain how this fits with Tekno’s Sony deal, it is worth noting that according to some reports the Tekno/Sony deal was for three singles following ‘Pana’. That presumably has been fulfilled with the songs the artist has released since then.
“Tekno is the latest addition to the Universal Music family,” said general manager of Universal Music Group Nigeria Ezegozie Eze. “Tekno’s talent is truly undeniable as we’ve seen already with the current array of hits already under his belt. His addition to the UMG fold ensures that his impressive sound and brand reach new markets as we continue to sell Africa to the world.”
