Red Bull Dance Your Style Kenya set for finale after Nairobi leg
- Samuel Brian (right) and Meshack Omondi emerged first and second, respectively, at the Nairobi edition of the Red Bull Dance Your Style Kenya competition on 13 July 2024.
Meshack Omondi came second after battling Brian in the signature dance battle sessions at an event that attracted a large number of the Nairobi dance community and competition enthusiasts on 13 July.
Speaking after being declared the winner, Brian said: “The competition was far more intense than I had expected, but I triumphed, which is incredibly satisfying. I am now confident in my ability to win the national finals trophy. With dedicated practice and faith, I trust in God’s plan.
“Showcasing my art on such an iconic platform and thereafter networking with dancers of all diversities was an invaluable experience.”
Two other dancers who made it to the semi-finals, Irene Shishi and Anthony Kiplimo, will also get the opportunity to compete at the upcoming national finals.
The next stop for Red Bull Dance Your Style is the official national finals in Nairobi on 10 August. This event will bring together all the regional winners and selected wild cards from the recently concluded qualifiers and online auditions for the ultimate battle. The winner from the national finals will represent Kenya at the world finals happening in Mumbai, India, this November.
Red Bull Dance Your Style’s winner is selected through public voting after dancers’ creativity, freestyle and musical skills are put to the test in front of a live audience. All urban dance styles are welcome, except for breakdancing. A DJ plays unpredictable music to which the dancers must adapt, showcasing their moves and versatility in the hope of impressing the crowd. After each battle, the spectators hold up blue or red placards to choose the winner.
Red Bull Kenya, now on its fifth edition, is aiming to upskill local dance communities while exposing them to different levels of dance on a global stage. This year, Red Bull Dance Your Style is taking place in 51 countries.
