Ethiopia: Muzikawi and Tigray Cultural Group release Ebuneyi single
Ethiopian record label Muzikawi, in collaboration with the Tigray Cultural Group, has announced the release of their new single ‘Ebuneyi’ from the upcoming album Sounds of Ashenda. The single is now available on all major digital streaming platforms ahead of the full album release in August.
Originally established in the 1960s, the Tigray Cultural Group has long been a pillar of cultural heritage in the Tigray region. The group was revitalised in August 2004 by a new generation of 37 members, including musicians, dancers, and artists. Of these, 33 are new members, while three are from the original group. This collective has continued to honour and showcase the rich traditions of Tigray, performing on prestigious stages across Ethiopia and internationally, including notable appearances in Angola and Qatar.
Sounds of Ashenda is a significant work that includes 10 tracks, each representing the diverse cultural sounds of the Tigray region, with contributions from Tigrigna, Erob, Kunama, Raya, Tenben, and more. Recorded in 2013 EC, this album is a testament to the enduring cultural heritage and vibrant musical traditions of Tigray.
‘Ebuneyi’ is a traditional song from the Enderta area around Mekelle. Traditionally sung by young women aged 15 to 21 during the Ashenda festival, this song captures the essence and spirit of the celebrations.
