KORA Awards set to return this December in Johannesburg

The news follows the unveiling of nominees in December 2023.

The scheme, established in 1994 and deriving its name from the traditional West African string instrument, claims to be the “biggest pan-African music awards ceremony”, and honours musical excellence in sub-Saharan Africa.

Since their launch, the awards have taken place 11 times, primarily in South Africa from 1996 to 2005, and later in Burkina Faso (2010) and Ivory Coast (2012). However, the event has faced numerous delays and cancellations due to issues such as contractual disputes and funding shortages.

This year’s prizes include $20 000 for various categories, $50 000 for sub-regional categories, and $250 000 for the best artist on the continent. 

The top 10 nominees, announced in May, include Nigeria’s Davido, Tems and Burna Boy, Tyla (South Africa) and Black Sherif (Ghana). The top 10 North American nominees for Best Artist of the Year are Beyoncé, Cardi B, J. Cole, Offset, Janelle Monáe, Chris Brown, Ciara, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and SZA.
