Open call: More than a Mother Song Awards for African musicians
Applications are ongoing for the 2024 edition of Merck Foundation’s More than a Mother Song Awards to raise awareness about social issues.
Merck Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, and the contest is being run in partnership with African First Ladies, who are also the campaign’s ambassadors.
The song’s themes should relate to breaking infertility stigma, supporting girls’ education, ending child marriage and female genital mutilation, stopping gender-based violence, and empowering women at all levels. Participants stand a chance to showcase their talent and win a cash prize.
Who can apply
The contest is open to all African singers and musical artists.
Applicants may send their submissions via email to submit@merck-foundation.com.
The submission deadline is 30 September 2024.
“One of the great challenges today is that we often feel untouched by the problems of others, even when we can easily do something to help. Giving people access to data most often leaves them feeling overwhelmed and disconnected, not empowered and poised for action,” Merck Foundation CEO and president Rasha Kelej said. “This is where art and media can make a difference. I am looking forward to all the entries from our African talents for these important awards.”
Kelej added: “I am extremely proud of our winners from our previous editions. All the winners are now members of our Merck Foundation Alumni and are working closely with us to support and empower women and girls at all levels. I am looking forward to receiving creative work this year too.”
Winners will be notified personally via email, followed by a press release for public announcement on the Merck Foundation and partner website and social media channels.
