African music legends honoured in Accra

The musicians served as headliners at the 2024 edition of the Global Media Alliance (GMA)-produced African Legends Night, a concert that has been running for over a decade to celebrate the unique musical styles and contributions of renowned African artists.

A citation presented by South African High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Grace Jeanet Mason, lauded Chaka Chaka  –  celebrated as the “Princess of Africa” and widely praised as a pioneer in South African pop music –  for her “continued dedication to achieving artistic excellence and her service in improving the health of Africans.”

George Jahraa was acknowledged for his decades-long career and “timeless classics have made him a household name,” while Adane Best was recognised as a trailblazer and honoured for his unique fusion of traditional Ga rhythms with modern elements, “propelling Ga music to new heights.”

On his part, Okyeame Kwame was celebrated for redefining the boundaries of Ghanaian music through his innovative blend of hiplife, highlife, and rap. His citation noted his numerous accolades and unforgettable hits, stressing his lyrical mastery and commitment to showcasing Ghanaian culture.

The musicians join other notable African inductees over the years including late South African great Hugh Masekela, Freddy Meiway from Ivory Coast, Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi and Gyedu-Blay Ambolley from Ghana, Femi Kuti and 2Baba Idibia (Nigeria), Awilo Longomba and Kanda Bongoman (DRC), among others.

“The African Legends Night has firmly established itself as one of Ghana’s premier music events, celebrating the rich musical heritage of Africa by bringing together legendary artistes who have shaped the continent’s music landscape,” organisers said. “Since its inception, the event has paid tribute to Africa’s finest musicians, providing a platform for seasoned artists and emerging talents to connect with audiences across generations.”

Since its inception, African Legends Night has featured performances from celebrated musicians from across the continent, with GMA director Emma Wenani stressing that “their music has left an indelible mark on the African music landscape, and we are excited to honor their contributions on one stage.”
