Tyla and Ayra Starr lead Africa with four 2024 MTV EMAs nods

Ayra Starr has been nominated for Best New, Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best Push categories, while Tyla, earning her first-ever MTV EMA nominations, is up for Best New, Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act, marking a major milestone in her career.

Other notable African artists in the mix include Burna Boy, Rema, Asake, and Tems, who have all been nominated in the Best Afrobeats category. Asake, along with Diamond Platnumz, DBN Gogo, and the duo TitoM & Yuppe, are also in contention for Best African Act.

On the global front, pop icon Taylor Swift leads the overall nominations with seven nods, including Best Artist, Best Video, Best Pop, and Biggest Fans. Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, and Sabrina Carpenter each secured five nominations, competing in categories such as Best Song, Best Video, and Best Artist. Other top contenders include Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and first-time nominees Chappell Roan and Tyla, each with four nominations.

This year, 19 artists have received their first-ever MTV EMA nominations, including Kehlani and Tinashe for Best R&B, Disclosure and Fred Again.. for Best Electronic, and Fontaines D.C. for Best Alternative. Notably, BTS’ Jimin earned his first solo nomination for Best K-Pop.

In the Best Collaboration category, superstars like Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Future, Metro Boomin, Kendrick Lamar, LISA, and Rosalía will compete for the prestigious award. Fans can also look forward to seeing top acts like Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Post Malone vying for awards in this category.

“We are incredibly proud to see African artists continuing to shine on the global stage at the 2024 MTV EMAs,” BET international senior vice-president & general manager of Paramount Africa Monde Twala said. “The nominations reflect the remarkable talent and diversity of Africa’s music scene, with Afrobeats and other genres making a powerful impact worldwide. Artists like Ayra Starr, Tyla, Burna Boy, and Tems are true ambassadors of African excellence, and their achievements inspire the next generation of creatives across the continent.”

The 2024 MTV EMAs will take place at Manchester’s Co-op Live on 10 November, marking the first time the event will be held in the city and celebrating its 30th anniversary. The event will be broadcast live on MTV via DStv Channel 322 and GOtv Channel 72.
