No wins for African artists at BET Hip Hop Awards 2024
African artists walked away without a single award from this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards taped in Las Vegas, US, on 8 October and aired on 15 October.
Nigeria’s Burna Boy and Odumodublvck as well as South Africa’s Maglera Doe Boy and Blxckie, were nominated in key categories, including Best International Flow and Best Live Performer. However, the night concluded with no trophies for the continent’s contingent.
“This year’s nominees exemplify the creativity and diversity of hip hop and the culture,” BET’s EVP, specials, music programming and music strategy, Connie Orlando, said ahead of the event.
Burna Boy lost the Best Live Act category to veteran US rapper Missy Elliott, while Odumodublvck, Maglera Doe Boy and Blxckie, lost the Best International Flow category to UK act Ghetts, Last year, that category was won by Ghanaian musician Black Sherif.
Meanwhile, US rapper Kendrick Lamar emerged as the night’s biggest winner, taking home eight awards, including the coveted Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Song of the Year for ‘Not Like Us’, and Lyricist of the Year.
