Wizkid drops Piece of My Heart ahead of Morayo album
Afrobeats star Wizkid has released his latest single, ‘Piece of My Heart’, featuring US act Brent Faiyaz, which is available for streaming and download on all major digital platforms.
The song’s arrival follows a release party in London, UK, earlier this month, where Wizkid also previewed unreleased records off his upcoming new album Morayo to positive reception. It also follows recent collaborations with fuji-pop star Asake and Jamaican act Shenseea, as well as the four-track S2 EP, released back in March featuring fellow Nigerian acts Wande Coal and Zlatan.
Thematically, ‘Piece of My Heart’, riding on laid-back instrumentation which sits at the intersection of Afrobeats, R&B, and Caribbean stylings, unpacks love, connection and vulnerability, drawing from sensual lyrics and lines on the notion of self-preservation alike.
“Nothing can tear us apart/ You’ve got a piece of my heart/ Nothing can tear us apart (Nothing in this world)/ You’ve got a piece of my heart (That belongs to you girl),” the hook sings.
When it drops on 22 November via Starboy/Sony Music International/RCA Records, Morayo, which translates from Wizkid’s native Yoruba as ‘I see joy’, will be his sixth studio album to date.
Speaking to Esquire in June, Wizkid explained that the collection honours his roots and late mother.
“I’ve named it my mum’s name,” Wizkid said. “It’s very important for people to know where the source of my magic comes from. I’m African, I’m Nigerian; that’s my blood, that’s my DNA. So, it’s important for me to push [Yoruba] out there – let people know about my culture. I like to know about everyone else’s culture, their way of life, and this is mine.”
Wizkid’s last album, More Love, Less Ego, was released in November 2022. The album before that, the 2020 Made in Lagos, was nominated for Best Global Music Album at the 64th Grammys.
