SA: Mmatema Moremi to host new gospel show
South African gospel singer and former Idols contestant Mmatema Moremi this week announced that she would host a new gospel show that premiers on SABC 1 next month.
“It is with great excitement and gratitude to announce my brand new TV show Gospel Unplugged. I will be hosting the new SABC 1 gospel show every Sunday from 22 July at 5.30pm,” Moremi wrote on Instagram.
Moremi told Music In Africa that she was excited about hosting the new show. “It’s a dream come true, a prayer answered. I’m thrilled and also a bit nervous about how people will receive it. It’s one of a kind for me because the show is something new and fresh. I’m glad I was chosen to host it.”
Asked how she got the gig, Moremi said: “I just received a call about the show and I was the perfect fit. I went for a screening and we started shooting.”
The ‘Ke Lerato’ singer said the recording of season 1 of Gospel Unplugged had already been concluded. She said the 26-episode season featured live performances, unplugged sessions and a car karaoke where celebrities were driven around while being interviewed.
"That’s something that people should really look forward to," Moremi said. “We also have a segment called the DJ Spin Session where we get one celebrity to come through and play once a week”.
The show, she said, would also feature other genres like hip hop and R&B.
“We’re already working on the second season. The SABC really loved it, so they are really looking forward to it,” Moremi said, adding that she had discovered a passion for presenting when Idols contestants were assigned to do a link to a segment for a local show called V-Entertainment.
“I think that’s where I realised I could actually do it. It’s one of those things that I wanted to venture into in 2018. When the Idols competition ended, One Gospel called and asked me to host their annual New Year’s Eve show.”
