Tega Oghenejobo named president of Afrobeats label Mavin Global
Nigeria-headquartered Afribeats label Mavin Global has promoted music executive Tega Oghenejobo to the role of president.
The announcement, which was made public on 29 October, stated that Oghenejobo will still function as chief operating officer (COO) at the firm, a post he has held since 2018. Before that, he was in charge of label partnerships and marketing.
According to a statement from the company, the move recognises Oghenejobo’s impact as COO and his value to the long-term strategy.
“As a founding member of Mavin Records in 2012, Oghenejobo has been instrumental in shaping the company into one of Africa’s leading music powerhouses,” the company founded by ace music producer Don Jazzy said, adding that the move will strengthen the label’s global reach and roster while setting new industry standards.
“I am often praised for being able to spot and raise superstars, but I can proudly say the most genius thing I have done in my life was being able to spot the passion and resilience in Tega,” Don Jazzy said. “From the early days, I’ve watched him be curious about the business, build teams, develop executives, and ensure our talents have sustainable careers from the start. His commitment to growing Mavin and shaping the future of African music has been relentless, and I’m confident that with him in this role, we’ll continue to break new ground and achieve even bigger milestones for our artists and company.”
“I carry this responsibility with deep gratitude and a commitment to building something greater than ourselves,” Oghenejobo said. “Together, we’ll continue to push boundaries, inspire others, and leave an indelible mark on the future of African music and entertainment.”
Mavin is home to established and emerging Afrobeats stars like Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Magixx, Crayon, Johnny Drille, and Lifesize Teddy. The label is also credited with propelling the careers of the likes of Tiwa Savage, Wande Coal, and Reekado Banks.
In February, Universal Music Group (UMG) revealed a major investment in Mavin Global, with reports placing its value between $125m and $200m. The move is expected to enhance Mavin’s capabilities in Nigeria, tap into UMG’s global network, and lead to US label partnerships, including Republic for Ayra Starr and Interscope for Lifesize Teddy.
