Electronic music in Africa
All you need to make music nowadays is a laptop. Electronic music has become the preferred, and affordable, method to make not only EDM but also the music for hundreds of other genres and sub-genres. Even hip hop, except for the rapping, is made with beats and samples generated by relatively inexpensive hardware and software.
Africa is currently enjoying a golden age of electronic music, much of it prompted by aesthetics like Afrofuturism, which inspires producers across the continent to create new sounds that the rest of the world is taking note of. Artists like Spoek Mathambo, Die Antwoord, Blinky Bill, Black Coffee, Ibaaku and Nonku Phiri are the flagbearers of a truly unique African sound that bears little similarity to the electronic music of the UK, US, Germany or Japan.
Some African cities like Nairobi and Cape Town have become electronic music hubs where new sub-genres are crafted all the time. In these cities one can hear a fusion of African languages and beats that are pushing the envelope on the international scene. Even global players like the Boiler Room have turned their gaze upon Africa, waiting to see what its creatives will come up with next.
