Open call: Field researchers in Senegal
The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF), a non-profit organisation operating in the African music sector, seeks to hire up to six experienced field researchers for a quantitative study focusing on Senegal’s creative industries.
Over a set period, the MIAF will conduct a robust quantitative analysis of the three select sectors, namely music, audio-visual (AV) and fashion.
We seek experienced, mature individuals with strong experience in research, as well as excellent coordination skills, to conduct interviews in different locations.
The successful candidates must be based or be able to travel to any of the following focus locations in Senegal: Dakar, Saint-Louis, Thiès, Ziguinchor, Matam, Tambacounda, and Kaolack.
Key responsibilities
- Attending all required briefing and training sessions.
- Read and fully understand the questionnaire module.
- Conduct interviews through computer-assisted personal interviews (CAPI) in one or more focus locations.
- Manage logistics related to field visits, including travel arrangements and meeting scheduling.
- Submitting progress reports to management.
- Providing ongoing feedback to management with a view to improve field research methodology.
- Coordinate with management, the research team and local partners to ensure the smooth execution of the research activities.
- Maintain regular communication with the project coordinators to report on progress and any challenges faced during fieldwork.
- Adhere strictly to the set ethical guidelines and research procedures.
Skills and requirements
- At least three years’ experience in research and data collection.
- Strong experience in the arts sector (music, AV and fashion industry experience is an advantage).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in French and English.
- Ability to eloquently explain the questions in the questionnaire.
- Cultural sensitivity and understanding to work effectively in diverse environments.
- Strong organisational skills to manage fieldwork logistics.
- Ability to conduct interviews and engage with respondents effectively.
- Proficiency in using data collection tools and software.
- Must be able to work 100% on the project for a period of between six to eight weeks.
- Willingness and ability to travel to specified districts in Senegal by car or public transport.
- Flexibility to stay in different locations as required by the project.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure with minimal supervision.
- Highly proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- University enrolment or degree is advantageous, but research experience and understanding of the local arts sector is key.
- Honesty is key.
