Open call: The Underground Kings Contest for emerging rappers in Ghana
Submissions are currently ongoing for The Underground Kings Contest, running as part of the inaugural HipHop Africa Fest 2024, scheduled for 28 December at Untamed Empire in Accra, Ghana.
Running in partnership with Ghana-headquartered distro Tieme Music, the initiative aims to spotlight emerging rappers in Ghana.
The top three winners of the competition will receive a performance slot on the main HipHop Africa Fest stage, as well as a distribution deal with Tieme Music
How to enter:
- Participants must share a 30 to 60-second freestyle video or original content across social media and tag @hiphopafricafest, @hiphopafricaa, @tiememusic, and @live.tiememusic.
- Contestants are encouraged to rally their fans for social media votes.
The deadline for submissions is 9 December.
Meanwhile, West African artists Kwesi Arthur and PsychoYP have been confirmed as headliners for the event, promoted as “Accra’s biggest hip hop celebration” and aiming to “celebrate and empower African hip hop talent.”
HipHop Africa founder Muumba David Bunna said: “This festival is about building a community that honours African artists and provides them with an arena to connect with fans and fellow creatives in the truest sense of the genre.”
Highlights of HipHop Africa Fest 2024 will include live performances, exclusive pop-up activities featuring streetwear designers and cultural innovators, as well as youth culture engagement, uniting communities representing fashion, skateboarding, art, and more.
