Founded in 1973, National Music Museum (NMM) is a music instrument museum based at the University of South Dakota campus, Vermillion, in the U.S. It is home to renowned collections of more than 15 000 American, European and African instruments from all cultures and historical periods. They include many of the earliest, best preserved and important instruments known to survive.
NMM has related objects and archival materials such as the Salabue-Fiorini-De Wit-Hermann-Witten-Rawlins Collection of 650 violin makers' labels. There are violin-making tools, early harpsichord and fortepiano tuning hammers and 1 000 brass instrument mouthpieces from just about every manufacturer. A specialized research library includes more than 4 800 books and magazines on all spheres of stringed instruments and violins in the world.
It is open to members of the public from Monday to Saturday at 09h00am until 17h00pm and from 13h00pm until 17h00pm on Sundays.
