Former National Arts Festival CEO appointed to lead Edinburgh Fringe
Former National Arts Festival (NAF) CEO Tony Lankester has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of the Edinburgh Fringe, in the UK.

Lankester, who led NAF from 2007 to 2019, will assume his new role in April 2025 to lead one of the world’s most prestigious arts festivals.
Lankester has a long-standing connection to Makhanda, having studied Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University before working in broadcasting and corporate sponsorships. Under his leadership, the NAF expanded its funding base, launched initiatives such as the Cape Town Fringe and Creativate Digital Arts Festival, and increased its international presence by touring productions to Fringe festivals in Australia, the UK, the US, and Europe. He was also the founding chair of the World Fringe Alliance, a network that opened global touring opportunities for artists.
Reflecting on his appointment, Lankester expressed gratitude for his time at NAF, stating, “I’m going into the job in Edinburgh with the winds of Makhanda at my back. The National Arts Festival is what started my love affair with the arts world, and I am forever grateful for what I learned there.”
NAF board chairperson Sikkie Kajee said: “We heartily congratulate Tony on his new role. His wealth of experience will serve him well as he takes the helm of this influential festival.” Kajee said.
Lankester remains a trustee on the National Arts Festival board and will now lead the Edinburgh Fringe in shaping the future of the world’s largest arts festival.
