Urban Music Awards launches in SA, unveils nominees
Urban Music Awards (UMA) is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a major international expansion, launching in more than 20 countries, with South Africa selected as the first to host the prestigious event.
- Tyla is leading with six nominations.
Originally founded in 2003 in the UK, the UMA has steadily grown over the years, expanding to the United States in 2007, the Caribbean in 2008, and Asia in 2009. The newly introduced Urban Music Awards South Africa (UMA SA) aims to elevate South African musicians, producers, DJs, and artists onto the global stage. The inaugural UMA SA ceremony is set to take place on 4 May 2025 at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria.
“The launch of UMA South Africa is more than an awards ceremony, it’s a movement to empower South African artists with the tools to brand, monetise, and transcend global audiences across Europe, Asia, North America, and the rest of Africa,” UMA founder & president, Jordan Kensington, said. “South African music is vibrant, diverse, and influential, and now is the time for the world to truly embrace its talent.”
South Africa has long been a hub of musical innovation, with genres like amapiano gaining international traction. The success of Tyla, Black Coffee, and Master KG’s global hit ‘Jerusalema’ has demonstrated the country’s influence in the global music industry. The UMA SA aims to further amplify this impact, providing a platform for South African artists to gain international recognition.
UMA and Official World Charts head of global partnerships Cressida Oppenheimer, said: “We are thrilled to expand the Urban Music Awards and Official World Charts into South Africa. This expansion is a game-changer, offering South African artists an unparalleled opportunity to succeed on a global stage. Music tourism is a multi-billion-dollar industry, encompassing sales, concerts, tours, festivals, merchandise, and businesses, and our mission is to ensure South African music reaps the rewards worldwide.”
Meanwhile, nominees for the inaugural UMA SA have been announced ahead of the awards ceremony at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria on 4 May.
Fans now have the opportunity to vote for their favourite nominees until midnight on 2 May.
