Lauryn Hill is coming to South Africa
US singer Lauryn Hill will perform at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 2 February. Hill, who last performed at South Africa’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2012, will be joined by US rapper Nas.
The event, which is part of her World Tour, will celebrate 20 years since Hill's anthemic debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Hill kicks off the European leg of the tour on 18 November in Brussels, Belguim, and will head to France, the UK, Ireland, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and South Africa.
Hill was supposed to make her debut in South Africa in 2001 but her performance was cancelled after the organiser, Eargasm Entertainment, said the singer had failed to honour other events, News24 reported.
Hill, who rose to prominence with hip hop outfit The Fugees in the early 1990s, will also use the tour to raise money for charity initiatives. A portion of the ticket sales will be channelled towards the MLH Fund, which directly contributes to education, health, agriculture, technology and community-based businesses and development initiatives throughout the diaspora.
“Your contribution will be put to use through donations made from ticket sales to support community-building worldwide,” the organisers said.
Hill spoke about the significance of the multi-Grammy-winning The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which is also her only solo album to date.
“This album chronicled an intimate piece of my young existence," she said. "It was the summation of most, if not all, of my most hopeful and positive emotions experienced to that date. I Loved and believed deeply in my community's ability to both love and heal itself provided it received the right amount of support and encouragement.
“Our world today, both complex and changing, is in need of the balance between moral fortitude and cathartic expression. I hope the love and energy that permeated this work can continue to inspire change with love and optimism at the helm.”
Tickets to the event will go on sale on 7 September via the Big Concerts official website.
