The Gericke Smith Music Centre (Dé Musiekatelje) is a vibrant musical institution dedicated to providing exceptional music education to students of all ages. Under the expert guidance of its founder and principal educator, the centre offers a comprehensive range of music lessons, including instrumental tuition, theory classes, and ensemble playing.
The centre prides itself on its supportive and relaxed atmosphere, encouraging students to explore their musical potential and pursue external music examinations, such as those offered by UNISA, ABRSM, and Trinity Guildhall. Students also have numerous opportunities to perform in arts festivals, concerts, and informal performances.
The driving force behind the Gericke Smith Music Centre is its founder, a highly experienced and enthusiastic educator with a rich musical background. Her musical journey began at the age of seven, and she went on to study for a B.Mus degree in Potchefstroom. During her studies, she had the privilege of learning from esteemed musicians, including Marie Mcachlan and Human Coetzee.
With extensive experience teaching students of all ages, from young children to adults, the educator has developed a unique approach that caters to individual needs and learning styles. Her expertise spans a range of instruments, including recorder, violin, cello, and music theory. She has also worked as a part-time teacher at the Gimnasium Music Centre in Potchefstroom.
The educator's comprehensive understanding of music and instruments enables her to provide students with a holistic music education, encompassing both practical and theoretical aspects. Her expertise extends beyond teaching, with knowledge in instrument maintenance, repair, and making. She has had the opportunity to learn from renowned violin and bow makers, including Svend Christenson and the late Kevin Dunbar.
